Early Summer Garden and Flowers

June 8, 2015 • Notes from a Working Mom

Summer Garden Mediterranean Baby-8A few years ago, I had an absolute, resolute disdain for planting. I was also never home long enough to keep up with and water plants.

(Those were the days when I owned a condo in Shadyside and enjoyed a packed social calendar.)  These days, my back deck is my oasis and Frank and I are the epitome of the State Farm “Never” commercial.

From my back deck, I can happily watch the kids play on the swing set as I nurse the baby, enjoy a cup of coffee, a cold beer with Frank, or man the grill.  I am completely happy to leave the mess outside.

This year I planted a small garden on my deck as well as flowers I can enjoy all summer.  It’s also wonderful to share with the kiddos.  Most mornings, I have at least one helper by my side as I water everything and we discuss what’s growing and how little bitty yellow flowers actually become tomatoes.

Summer Garden Mediterranean Baby-2I also planted fewer herbs this year, focusing on basil, Italian parsley, chives, and rosemary.  I also planted three different types of tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, and six strawberry plants.  So far, so good for everything, but we’ll have to wait until later in the summer to see how they do.  If anyone has any idea how to grow cucumbers on the deck, please let me know!  We eat at least one cucumber a day and they make me feel like I’m in Greece…they are our absolute favorite!

As for the flowers, they have also taken well and are starting to grow along with my hydrangeas and rose bushes that line the deck.  All in all, it’s a great assortment to care for and enjoy this summer.  I am so happy to be outside and watch everything bloom!

I’ll update you later in the summer when everything fills in and is ready to eat.  By the way, I am completely open to suggestions as I am a novice in this field.

    Hey Nicole,

We just planted 50 roma tomatoes plants, green peppers, banana peppers, cucumbers etc… in our garden. We plan on canning spag. sauce, stewed tomatoes, pizza sauce etc… Can’t wait to see how everything turns out. Last year I lost everything from some kind of fungas, hopefully this year we will have better luck!!
