Ok, so this recipe isn’t really “Mediterranean”, but it’s what my Mediterranean family had for dinner last night and it was delicious!! I actually came across a small recipe box from my grandmother.  It is chock-full of classic family recipes from her mother and aunts, handwritten on weathered recipe cards.  This is the first one I’m sharing and plan on sharing more in future posts.  Overall, classic and simple wins in my book every time!

Traditional Sloppy Joes

  • 1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped celery
  • 1/4 cup green pepper
  • 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • pinch salt
  • 6 potato rolls

Over medium-low heat, brown the ground meat.

In the meantime, chop the onion, celery, and green pepper and add to meat.

Cook for 5 minutes, combining the ingredients.

Add tomato sauce, ketchup, vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire, and salt.

Combine the ingredients thoroughly and let cook for another 5 minutes.

Using the potato rolls, create your sandwiches.

For your little ones, you may want to place some sloppy joe mixture over saltine crackers, so they can more easily pick them up!
